HEDONISM AND STYLE

Unconstrained violence and voyeurism dominate the media and are absorbed by the most vulnerable people, bringing on terrible forms of imitation. If, on the one hand, the spirit of the times seems to be that of supine and total acceptance of the present and a lack of originality, on the other it imperiously shows a change.
The results of the aggressive and obstinately obtuse policies already repeatedly condemned by history apart, the trend of the economies of the developed countries seems to point the way to the need for a new spirit, a different approach to the problems of our age.
That hate and violence produce only hate and violence in turn should, after millennia of history, be a given, and it seems to me to be clear to everyone that conformity or ‘globalization’ – the name given today to the mother of all conformities – can, if not accompanied by attention to mankind’s most profound values, bring forth disastrous results.
We are living in an age which is long on hedonism but short on style, overflowing with material goods but stripped of introspection.
This is a historical moment, which in some ways brings to mind classical Greece with its cult of beauty and youth, and its terror of death that drove Achilles to exclaim: “Better a beggar on earth than a king in the Shades”. And in those times how differently did the young look upon adults! He who had lived had something to teach; the elder was the wise man; today he is just old. And the old do not interest anybody any more, not market researchers or politicians, let alone young people, caught up as they are in their own reality show and their conformity at all costs.
The same jeans, same school backpacks, same mobiles, same music, same model of car or motorbike. Then, all of a sudden, you find one who is looking for a particular way of belonging in the world, of looking at life! What joy, what uplift, what relief! This is the moment you say to yourself: “So there’s still hope, all is not lost!”
But how rare it is to find that young person able to resist the moral – when not physical – constraints of conformity. What terrible effort must be directed upon oneself to put aside the gratification of the group, the recognition of others! What interior strength to be able to follow one’s own intentions, create one’s own tastes, at firsthand, not second.
What riches the world can acquire from one of these rare non-conforming youngsters, one looking to follow his or her own path, style, and identity. Not without temptations or stumbles along the way, of course, but aware of the tremendous beauty of the interior search for oneself.
Personally, I believe that a true impulse for a less worrisome and superficial future will come precisely from those youngsters who are able to choose their own way, with outward freedom and inward independence.
If not, from whom?
