Io sono il bellicoso Acheo dall’occhio lampeggiante
E il cereo Troiano, dopo lo scempio reso al padre.
Io sono il minuto Indiano che ha liberato il continente
E il vile assassino che il sogno ha frantumato.
Io sono il Siracusano che ha sollevato il mondo
E l’oscuro miles, che il petto ne ha squarciato.
Io sono il bimbo affogato sulla spiaggia
E il torvo trafficante d’uomini sul mare.
Io sono il soldato ebbro di birra e di bandiere
E la fanciulla stuprata tra i rifiuti.
Io sono la giovane in fuga dall’oltraggio
E l’amante che ne ha spezzato il volo.
Io sono la vittima e il carnefice,
Il santo e l’assassino,
Il saggio e l’incosciente,
La preda e il predatore.
Serrati avevo i brevi pugni quando nacqui,
Socchiusi gli occhi a ricercar sembianze
D’una obliata tessitura d’anni.
Mi tradì il grido ed il singhiozzo,
L’affanno di portare sulle spalle
Grave, il fardello del ritorno.

I am the warlike Achaean with flashing eyes
And the pale Trojan, after the slaughter handed back to his father.
I am the tiny Indian who set the continent free
And the vile murderer who his dream shattered.
I am the Syracusan who lifted the world
And the obscure miles who tore his chest open.
I am the child drowned on the beach
And the grim trafficker of men on the sea.
I am the soldier drunk with beer and flags
And the girl raped among the rubbish.
I am the young woman fleeing outrage
And the lover who broke her flight.
I am the victim and the perpetrator,
The saint and the murderer,
The wise and the thoughtless,
The prey and the predator.
Clenched were my short fists when I was born,
Half-opened my eyes to search for appearance
Of a forgotten tapestry of years.
My cry and my sobs betrayed me,
The struggle to carry on my shoulders
Heavy, the burden of return.
