Io siedo e guardo tutte le sofferenze del mondo, tutta
\nl’oppressione la vergogna,
\nio odio i convulsi singhiozzi segreti dei giovani angosciati
\ncon se stessi, in preda al rimorso delle azioni commesse,
\nio vedo nella vita umile la madre maltrattata dai figli,
\nmorente, abbandonata, smunta, disperata,
\nio vedo la moglie maltrattata dal marito, vedo il seduttore
\ningannevole di giovani donne,
\nio noto gli strazi della gelosia e dell’amore respinto
\nche cercano di nascondersi, io vedo tutto questo sulla terra,
\nio vedo l’opera della guerra, della pestilenza, della tirannia,
\nio vedo martiri e prigionieri,
\nio osservo la fame sul mare, osservo i marinai che tirano
\na sorte per stabilire chi dovr\u00e0 essere ucciso perch\u00e9 gli altri vivano,
\nio osservo le umiliazioni e le degradazioni inflitte dai
\nprepotenti ai lavoratori, ai poveri, ai negri e agli altri;
\ntutto questo… tutta la meschinit\u00e0 e la sofferenza senza
\nfine io contemplo standomene qui seduto,
\nvedo, ascolto, e taccio.<\/p>\n
